Mission and Method

The Kentucky Research Consortium for Energy and Environment (KRCEE) was created to support the Department of Energy’s (DOE) efforts in the technically sound, expeditious and economically viable environmental restoration and re-use of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP), the Western Kentucky Wildlife Management Area (WKWMA), and surrounding areas through:

  • Application of technical expertise to assess and accelerate the implementation of cost-effective technologies and methodologies that result in accelerated risk reduction and clean-up.
  • Establishment of problem-specific Project Teams drawn from disciplines of expertise at participating universities and industry that work with and through DOE and its contractors to accelerate the implementation of project concepts and plans. Project Team focus is on accelerated implementation of cost-effective remedial activities to minimize impacts on public health and the environment.
  • Technical review of proposed remediation plans and any non-consensus technical issues associated with their implementation.
  • Utilization of Project Teams to develop and implement project activities.  Project Teams are comprised of  subject matter experts from academia, national laboratories, regulatory agencies and industry to help forge consensus solutions to technical problems related to the clean-up and ongoing operations of the PGDP site.

Long-term and short-term project tasks are identified through consultation and requests from DOE, site contractors, regulatory participants, stakeholders and the academic community.  Projects are developed  by problem-specific Project Teams made up of faculty, researchers and professional staff drawn from the University of Kentucky (both the main campus and the Paducah campus) state and regional academic institutions, and industry. Project Team members are representative of applied academic disciplines related to the Project Team task.

The activities of the KRCEE are administered through the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER). Annual workplans, deliverables, and associated project budgets are developed through consultation with DOE and address both short-term and long-term tasks to ensure relevancy to on-going site efforts.
